Layers of old paint hide detail and stop anything new from bonding. Getting them off is slow work and the method matters more than the effort: heat on the wrong surface scorches it, and aggressive chemicals on soft masonry do damage that does not come back.

We choose the method for the material — careful heat, chemical strippers or mechanical removal — and work to a surface that is sound and ready to finish rather than merely bare.

Buildings from before 1978 may have lead paint. Where that is a possibility we say so before work begins and handle it accordingly, rather than discovering it halfway through.

Is lead paint a concern?
In buildings from before 1978 it can be. We raise it before starting rather than partway through, and handle it to the rules that apply.
Will stripping damage the wood underneath?
Not with the right method. The damage people have seen usually comes from heat or chemicals used on the wrong surface.
